And here it is!

The Last Day of the Fifth Age.

No, seriously, there it is. It's not done, of course; it's merely a rough draft, and I don't even dig the ending all that hard right now (by which I mean the specific last few words, which I don't think make for a strong outro, rather than the epilogue itself, which I'm fine with), and I haven't even checked it for internal cohesion yet (and am in fact aware of one major plot hole which I know how to sew up but haven't had the gumption to find yet), but I'm putting it up anyway. As a free download, no less! Why is this? Only an unordered list can tell!

  • Some folk have already read half the thing, and I want them to have easy access to the remainder.
  • Some of my most trusted editors read this blog, and I'd like them to be able to see the beast...
  • ...without being able to correct it. It's a non-editable PDF file; a comprehensive spell-check is of no use to me until the content work is complete.
  • Should my computer explode (somewhat likely) and GMail's servers also explode (less likely), there will still be an extant copy of the novel, albeit in an irksome format.
  • Cory Doctorow makes all of his novels available for free on the Internet. Do I think I'm better than Cory Doctorow or something?
  • He's an Author. He wrote Eastern Standard Tribe, which was pretty okay.
  • I may actually be better than Cory Doctorow.
  • Making the novel so blatantly public will totally work FOR me if copyright issues come in to play. I can't be bothered to explain how.
  • I'm infinitely less concerned in selling this one to people I know. I loved Mad Jack to bits... but it wouldn't be an easy sell to publishers. This one has a plot that can be summed up on one sentance. And that sentance includes the phrase "A band of adventurers". Wizards of the Coast, eat your heart out!
  • Having some of you lot on my ass about what worked and didn't will be the sort of motivation to get things done that I need to... you know... get things done.
  • Finalement: it's a birthday present!

It's the third birthday of my wee little weblog. And you know how I celebrated it last year? By unveiling my other book. Yes, that one was done to first edition standards, but that one was also ten thousand words shorter and unaccompanied by a month of crippling depression (HYPERBOLE IN USE). It's an odd bit of synchronisity, innit? Not crazy-odd, but I find it interesting. And I don't really care that you don't. Ha.

You kids enjoy, I hope. Bye bye!

That should be "synchronicity." Now wait till I get started on the book!

In my defence, the spellcheck isn't working. And also, if I'm writinag about a magical land of fantasy, I can spell words however the heck I want, and it all just makes it more fantastical!
