Russian Porch Dance!
- Deal four (4) cards to each player. Place the deck between all players and flip the top card from the deck into the active pile. The card on top of the active pile is the active card.
- Play begins with the person seated to the right of the dealer, then proceeds clockwise (so that the dealer plays second). Players must place a card onto the active pile whose value is equal to or within one (1) of the active card (for example, if the active card is a 5, one may play a 4, 5, or 6). An Ace is considered to be adjacent in value to both a King and a 2.
- If the player cannot comply with rule 2, he or she must place any card in his or her hand on top of the active pile, draw two (2) penalty cards from the deck, and play again.
- Exceptions to rule 3 (these only apply if one cannot comply to rule 2, so that one cannot play a pair of 5s on a 4, 5, or 6, but on any other active card.). Instead of playing a card and picking up two penalty cards, a player may play:
- A pair, in which case only one (1) penalty card must be drawn.
- Three of a Kind, in which case no (0) penalty cards are drawn.
- Four of a Kind, in which no penalty cards are drawn and the player is allowed to play one (1) additional bonus card from his or her hand on top of the active pile.
- If the game is being played with multiple decks, Five of a Kind, Six of a Kind etc. will all allow the player to place another bonus card on the active pile (Five of a Kind allows two (2) bonus cards, Six of a Kind allows three (3), etc.)
- Special cards:
- Red Threes (3): If at any point, a red three is played, the direction of rotation of play reverses. (i.e. the first red three will make play move counter-clockwise, the second will return it to clockwise). A red three is otherwise treated as a normal card.
- Black Sevens (7): A black seven may be thrown on any active card regardless of its value. Afterwards, the top card from the deck is turned onto the active pile and play continues.
- Playing out of turn: There is a three (3) card penalty for playing out of turn, or in the wrong order (e.g. drawing penalty cards before playing a card).
- Winning: The object of the game is to play all of ones cards. When a player wins, the remaining players continue until someone wins last.
Go on, give it a shot. You may like it. Oh! And I almost forgot the most important rule, this being Russian Porch Dance, and all, all players are angry Russians. You are encouraged, though not required, to play the game in a bad Russian accent. And when you win, you do a dance. And you could play it all on the porch, if you really must.
Anyway, you like? Tell me. You not like? Tell me why not. Either way, enjoy.
